In SafeHands is a compilation of thirty years of photography in Africa, related to pregnancy, birth, women’s health and traditional practices, by the award-winning photographer, Nancy Durrell McKenna.  In SafeHands is dedicated to the girls, women, and men, who welcomed her into their lives and entrusted her to tell their stories.

Nancy Durrell McKenna is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker, with a passion for women's global health.  She has spent most of her professional life documenting the lives, rituals and traditions of women and their families, worldwide in collaboration with international NGOs and government agencies. She has worked with leading authors on books about pregnancy and birth, child development and sexuality and contributed to numerous photographic exhibitions. Her most recent exhibition, In SafeHands, shown at The College of Medicine, La Coruña Spain / Colegio Oficial de Médicos, February 2022, highlights how cultural traditions and social norms impact the lives of women, girls and men. This exhibition was first shown at the Royal British Columbia Museum, Victoria Canada in 2019.

Nancy believes in the power of the visual to tell a story and it is with that understanding that she founded SafeHands in 2003.

SafeHands uses the power of photography, film, and digital technology to overcome the barriers of language and literacy and reaches rural communities with vital information about reproductive health and rights.

Working with global, national, and local partners, SafeHands addresses critical issues: Female Genital Mutilation, Child Marriage and Period Poverty with their multi-platform storytelling that empowers, educates, and inspires audiences to take action.
